According to Pausanias, inhabitants of Klazomene escaped from the Persians to the island  to save their life.
When Alexander the Great came there, he built a passage or mound (may be a road) between the island and the mainland. This passage served the islanders as a communication between the island and mainland.
We do not know when the islanders came back to the mainland. It is probable that the islanders remained in the island for a long time, because of the antiquities there, such as a port, a theater etc.
The road was probably repaired in Roman times and is still visible.
R. Chandler (1765, his book was published in 1806)  and R. Walsh (1836) wrote their observations in their books.
Figure 1, depicts the road according to their description.

The road consisted of large blocks with apertures, through which tiled pipes conveyed water from the mainland to the island (Figure 2).

Today as in 1765 the upper works have been demolished, and the materials, a few large rough stones excepted, removed.
